1940年
東京美術学校(芸大)洋画科卒。

1942年
坂倉建築事務所研究員となる。シャルロット・ペリアンのアシスタントとして日本全国を廻り、工芸の視察・指導を行う。

1952年
毎日新聞社主催の第一回工業デザインコンクール(現・毎日デザイン賞)に応募、第一席に入選。
財団法人柳工業デザイン研究会を設立。

1953年
女子美術大学講師に就任。1967年辞任。

1954年
国際デザイン協会(現・日本デザインコミッティー)のメンバーとなる。1980年退会。 金沢美術工芸大学、工業デザイン科主任教授に就任。

1956年
第一回柳工業デザイン研究会の個展を開催。
アメリカ・アスペンで催された国際デザイン会議にスピーカーとして出席、その後生産性本部の後援によりアメリカ工業デザインを視察、引続きヨーロッパを廻り、デザイン並びにデザイン一般の視察を行う。

1957年
3月、グッドデザイン交換展のため、北欧諸国を旅行。
8月、イタリア・ミラノ市で行われる第11回トリエンナーレ展(国際デザイン展)に個人の招待出品を受け、ゴールド・メダル受賞。

1960年
世界デザイン会議(東京)の実行委員となる。

1961年
カッセル市(西ドイツ)のデザイン専門学校の工業デザイン科主任教授として一年間招聘される。

1964年
東京オリンピックで聖火リレーのトーチ・ホルダー、および水泳競技場内の座席等をデザインして、オリンピック設備のデザイン・ポリシーに積極参加した。
第3回ドキュメンタ(ドイツ・カッセルの国際展)に世界の工業デザイナー20人の中の一人として招待出品を受ける。

1972年
札幌冬期オリンピックで聖火台をデザイン。

1977年
日本民芸館館長に就任。

1980年
イタリア・ミラノ市近代美術館に於て、ミラノ市主催の展覧会柳宗理展を開く。

1981年
紫綬褒章受賞。
ヘルシンキ(フィンランド)にて、ICOGRADA ICSIDIFI 合同デザイン会議“DESIGN '81”で基調演説「伝統と創造」を行う。
フィンランド・デザイナー協会の名誉会員に推される。

1983年
イタリア文化会館(東京)に於て柳宗理デザイン展を開く。
ボンベイ(インド)の工科大学・デザインセンター工業デザイン教授として招聘される。

1985年
関越自動車道、関越トンネル坑口デザイン。

1987年
インド・ニューデリーのラリットカラギャラリーに於て“日本民芸展”ディスプレーを行う。

1988年
有楽町西武にて柳宗理デザイン展を開く。

1991年
東名高速道路、足柄橋デザイン。
UK'91に於て(ロンドン・グラスゴー他)“日本民芸展”・“棟方展”ディスプレーを行う。

1998年
池袋・セゾン美術館にて「柳宗理のデザイン」展を行う

Sori(munemichi)Yanagi (born June 29,1915) the first son of Soetsu(Muneyoshi Yanagi)

1940
graduated from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts, majoring in painting.
studied architecture at Mr. Junzo Sakakura's architect's office.

1942
worked as an assistant of Mrs. Charlotte Perriand who was cooperator of Mr. Le Corbusier, while she was in Japan for counseling on the improvement of design of Japanese products.

1952
established Yanagi's design institute.

1953
participated as a member of Japan committee in international design.
appointed lecturer at the Tokyo women's college of art. resigned 1964.

1954
appointed as chief professor to the department of industrial design, Kanazawa university of art and crafts.

1956
held a one man show in Tokyo.
attended as appointed speaker a the Aspen international design conference in U.S.A.

1957
participated in the Triennale (Milano,Italy) in the industrial design section. won the gold medal of Triennale di Milano.

1960
became a member of the executive committee of the world design conference in Tokyo.

1961
invited to Staatliche Werkkunstschule kassel as invited professor for one year.

1964
invited to the third documenta at Kassel for exhibiting his works. designed the torch-holder for Tokyo Olympic fire relay.

1970
designed the sacred fire stand for the winter Olympic games at Sapporo, Japan.

1977
appointed as the director of Japan folk crafts museum.

1980
exhibited works at the pavilion of modern art in Milano, Italy.

1981
decorated with the order of purple ribbon for high contribution in culture and art. keynote speaker, title "tradition and creation" at the conference of ICOGRADA ICSID IFI, at Helsinki, Finland.
nominated honorable member of Finish designers' association.

1983
held a one man show at Italian cultural center in Tokyo.
invited as guest professor at the Design center, Bombay Institute of Design.

1985
designed at the entrance area landscape design for the Kanetsu Tunnel of the Kanetsu Highway.

1991
received the award of Japan Society of civil engineers for the work of designing hiway bridge.
